Rock History - The 80s
The 80s, for many, was where the most important derivatives of the genre emerged. And it is not wrong to say, because the immense range of new styles was more than evident.
Among bands of this style (which drove the derivative to the point of creating more or less as a Renaissance movement) we can mention Marillion, Tweelfh Night and Quasar, among others. Influenced mostly by groups like Camel, and Genesis, which were most successful during the 70s.
The new wave, gains greater strength from this decade, derived mainly from punk. This was projected as a melodic and aesthetic movement, because it combined the appearance with the style as an essential complement.
Of this movement, you can mention pop rock groups (at that time) such as Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and INXS, among others.
Regardless of the successes fertilized by artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson, great references of international pop, American rock emerged with greater strength thanks to artists such as Tom Petty, Joan Jett, Bryan Adams and John Hiatt.
Alternative rock begins to show its face thanks to groups such as REM, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, New Order and Sonic Youth, among others, always with the typical characteristic of a group or artist that starts, with an underground style from the beginning and then with a more popular and commercial one, without losing the main alternative essence.
When rock mixed with rap, they set the stage for what would be rap metal, with groups like Run-D.M.C. and the renowned Beastie Boys.
Megadeth, Anthrax, Panther, Slayer and Metallica mark the beginning of thrash metal during the decade, as well as Destruction and Tankard. which gave a European and different style to the aggressive and fast interpretations that this derivative demands.
With just over two years before the decade ended, a group called Guns N`Roses, reinvents or rather, incorporates new elements to hard rock. Records like Appetite for Destruction and G N´R Lies are more than clear examples of this.
The sound of bands like Happy Mondays and 808 State, which combined the indie with dance sounds, managed to greatly influence the rhythm of the U2 band, evidencing this on their Achtung Baby album.
Depeche Mode and Slowdive were only some of the groups that emerged at the end of the decade (with a more preferred inclination towards electronic music in this case) and were characterized by elevating and promoting the shoegazing style, an alternative derivative of rock where bands used to interpret the songs without making direct eye contact with fans, just looking at the floor.
Later years would arise the second wave of black metal.
Some of the most prominent groups and artists of the decade:
Bruce springsteen
In 73 he published his first album called Greetings Froms Asbury Park, with songs like The Angel and For You. But it was not until the release of his third album entitled Born To Run, that Bruce gets the pleasant recognition he deserved, because the sound had elements of classical rock, with touches of country and folk.
In 84 publishes Born In The USA, its greatest success in terms of sales refers, with more than 15 million copies sold, only in the United States. Thanks to this he holds the top positions for several weeks, in his country. Topics such as Born In The U.S.A, Cover Me, and Dancing In The Dark, among others, stand out.
At the beginning of 2009, the artist obtains a Golden Globe for the theme The Wrestler, a song included in the homonymous film by Mickey Rourke.
Later that same year, his sixteenth album entitled Working on a Dream, is released and quickly placed in the top positions of the Bilboard list, selling more than 220,000 copies, only during its first week.
The cure
Let's start in 1972. The band was first formed by the British Robert Smith as vocalist, composer and guitarist, Laurence Tolhurst on percussion, Marc Ceccagno on first guitar, Michael Dempsey on second guitar and Alan Hill on bass. Previously they were called The Obelisk.
Due to certain changes within the group, Robert Smith becomes the band's vocalist, under the name The Easy Cure.
Already by '78, Smith, Tolhurst and Dempsey begin to move under the name of The Cure, recording at the end of that same year the single Killing an Arab, described by many as a racist theme.
At the beginning of the 80's Seventeen Records was launched, managing to be in the highest positions of the English lists.
Simth adopts a more particular style from the Faith album, released in 81, with an extravagant hairstyle and gothic makeup.
At the beginning of 2001 the band releases a compilation CD titled Greatest Hits, together with a DVD where you can find their music videos.
Three years later they receive an award from the MTV network for their long history in musical history.
Iron maiden
Shortly after publishing a compilation of his first songs entitled Metal Fot Mutas, they release their debut album Iron Maiden, reaching number 4 on their country's charts.
In 98 they release Virtual XI, a notoriously dark album, due to the style, the lyrics and the design itself. Later, in '99, they released a video game called Ed Hunter, accompanied by a compilation disc of 20 themes chosen by fans via online through the group's website.
The group has led numerous events throughout its history, both at festivals such as the Wacken Open Air, the Ozzfest in 2005 and Rock in Rio, among others.
U2
At the beginning of the decade they publish Boy, the band's first album, which got a very good response from fans in the United States and Great Britain. But it was really October, the album that would become a bestseller, leading them to play cities like London.
It was so much the success obtained by the band thanks to this and its other two called War and The Unforgottable Fire, that after the release of The Joshua Tree in 87, the disc is sold out in just two days. It is considered one of the best and most successful works of the band to date, with themes such as I Still Haven`t Found What I`m Looking For, Running to Stand Still and One Tree Hill.
To end 2002, the band decides to publish The Best of 1990-2000, a compilation album where they highlight their best songs from the 90's.
Two years later, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is launched, which highlights Vertigo, City of Blinding Lights and All Because Of You.
They were the first to broadcast a live concert through the online YouTube video website, thanks to the Rose Bowl in California, as part of the 360º Tour.
The police
Gordon Summer (Sting), Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani, would form the band at first. Their sound was very original and proper in such a way that it earned them a great success around the world.
The year 1978 came and that meant the release of his first album entitled Outlandos D`Amour, which became a bestseller. The album mixes certain styles such as jazz, rock and reggae within the compositions. Topics such as So Lonely and Roxanne stand out.
The themes of the band managed to go very far. Both the LP Reggatta de Blanc, launched in 79, and Zenyattá Mondatta, published in 80, managed to occupy the top positions in Europe and the United States. From Reggatta, Message in a bottle and Walking on the moon stood out, among others, and from Mondatta you can name Don’t stand so close to me.
They made a last presentation in Australia in 84, within the Synchronicity album tour.
In 2007, many fans were surprised during the Grammy Awards, offering a live concert. Months later they meet to go on tour in commemoration of the band's old successes, touring countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan and Spain, among others.
Europe
Initially the band was called Force and was composed of Joey Tempest, John Norum, Peter Olsson and Tony Reno. From there they started with some recordings but none would get the required attention until 1982, when they get the jackpot in a contest before more than 4000 bands.
This is when the band's name is modified to Europe and it is here (worth the redundancy) where, shortly after, they record their debut album entitled Europe, which can highlight songs such as In the Future to Come, Farewell and Seven Doors Hotel, which was positioned in the Top 10 of Japan.
A year later they publish The Final Countdown with which they achieve success quickly, breaking world sales records (with more than 6 million copies sold).
In 87 they dedicated themselves to tour a large part of the European continent, including the United States.
Six years later a compilation album entitled 1982-1992 is released where they manage to summarize much of the successes achieved in ten years.
On July 12 of last year, Europe confirmed that they would be in the process of recording a new album with the help of Kevin Shirley. They also announced that it would go on sale in April or May of this year, under the name Bag of Bones.
Metallica
The band's first single appears a year later (1982) under the name of Massacre. But it is really in 86, with Master of Puppets, that they get more notoriety within the artistic field, in addition to becoming one of the classic heavy metal albums like The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden. The album is, to this day, a fairly important influence within the thrash genre.
In 91 they release their fifth album Metallica, better known as The Black Album, then the album Load in 96 and ReLoad, a year later. Later they publish the album Garage Inc. in 1998, where they cover a large number of bands that were of great influence in their career.
They also decided to cut their hair, drastically changing, perhaps the image, which Metallica promoted from the beginning.
In 2008 they released their ninth album entitled Death Magnetic, again placing the band within the style that characterized it. From this point on again they choose the sound of classics like ... And Justice for All and Master of Puppets, among others who made history throughout their career.
Guns N´ Roses
With Duff McKagan on bass, Steven Dler on drums and Axel Rose as vocalist, the group begins its adventures already at the end of the decade, releasing exactly in 87, the album Appetite for Destruction.
Topics such as Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Chil O` Mine and Paradise City are just some of those that would remain in the memory of the fans, in addition to being the best selling debut album, with a figure of about 25 million copies around of the world.
In 89 they started a tour with the Rolling Stones, while Axel had declared that he would leave the band if the serious drug problems that affected the group were not solved. Steve Adler is expelled from the group in the early 90's and this is replaced by Matt Sorum - pushing aside the inclusion of Dizzy Reed as an official member.
Chinese Democracy, would be the album - with original songs - that would be released after Use Your Illusion (1 and 2) and The Spaguetti Incident. It appears in 2008 and leads to a series of tours around the world.
During the tours, the musicians took advantage to play almost all the songs of Apettite for Destruction and Use you Illusion, in addition to interpreting the new songs of Chinese Democracy, such as Better, Street of Dreams and There Was A Time, among others.
Last year they performed in our country, in a massive concert inside the Jockey Club. More than 60,000 people gathered at night.
The proposals of the bands were strengthened and expanded in terms of rhythm and style.
Another factor is, the great help that I mean for the artists, the beginning of the broadcasts of the MTV network on August 1, 1981. The television channel proposed a true revolution within the international musical culture and this was that of the video clips .
They consisted basically of short clips of 2 or 3 minutes where you could observe the performance of the members of a band within a specific situation. The chain also propelled the versatility of the style and the outfit that the artists wore when interpreting the themes.
The first video that saw the light on that station was Video Killed The Radio Star, from the pop rock band The Buggles.
For the most part, artists (mostly those who presented glam rock as a style) chose to play with sexual misrepresentation, using a girl's dress and makeup as elements.
The lyrics of the time reflected, mostly but not in all cases, the mundane pleasures that were lived at that time more frequently, such as drugs and sex.
Shortly after a decade of great changes, technological contributions in the recordings and the diversification of the genre would come. The birth of grunge would also come, a movement that had as its great reference the legendary Kurt Cobain.
